Border Match ends in Glendale Win

Agricultural Societies take to the Pitch for their Annual Cricket Contest

The annual cricket match between Agricultural Societies North and South of the border stirs local pride, and brings the young men either side of the Tweed from their fields and gardens to bat for the honour of their team – and their nation of course!

This year’s contest at the crease between the Glendale Agricultural Society (GAS) and the Border Union Agricultural Society (BUAS) resulted in a win for Glendale.

The GAS team won with a score 109 runs, beating the BUAS boys with just an over to spare.

Andrew Reed, team Captain for the Glendale Agricultural Society, said:  “We were all fortunate, as the weather gave us the opportunity for a game, but thanks really go to Wooler Cricket Club for providing their wicket, and Ray Wood for umpiring from Wooler.  Both teams had a good game, there was a great spirit to the match, and the correct etiquette was followed throughout, as you would expect!

“We are happy to say that Glendale won, which now makes it 2 all, since the annual match was first initiated.  However it was an extremely close game, with Wooler needing to score ten runs in the last two overs and we managed to do this with an over to spare.”

The Men of the Match were Ali Graham for Wooler and Callum Burn who both scored 25 runs, before each had to retire, under the rules of the game.

Captain of the Border Union Team, Andrew Wallace, added:  “Everyone played their part in what was both a very enjoyable game and day out.  We would like to congratulate all of the non-cricketers for taking part and supporting what has become a really competitive event for both societies.  All of us are extremely grateful to Anne Mattheson for the Catering.”
