Glendale Agricultural Society is on the Move

Glendale Agricultural Society (GAS) is re-locating from its current home in the Cheviot Centre to a more prominent location in Wooler Market Place.  This is a strategic move to raise the profile of the Society’s work within the community of Glendale.

Since its foundation 128 years ago, The Glendale Agricultural Society has been integral to the farming and wider rural industries within the Glendale area. In recent years the Society has remained a progressive community force, which has continued to grow from strength to strength, educating and showcasing the special skills and pursuits of the countryside. It commends people through its long service and Lifetime Achievements Awards, and it awards local farmers through livestock and forage competitions. It is also the organiser of two esteemed local events, both which are platforms for highlighting the importance of farming and rural businesses to our local economy.

GAS’s main annual event is The Glendale Show, an impressive showcase of the finest of livestock, fruit flowers, vegetables, food, drink, crafts which has a consistent footfall of in the region of 12,000 visitors.  The other is the more recently founded multi- award-winning educational event – The Glendale Agricultural Society’s Childrens’ Countryside Day. Now in its fifteenth year and often fondly referred to as the Classroom in the Countryside, this is an event where children learn and experience farming and rural life first-hand.

Headed up by Rachael Tait Company Secretary for GAS and supported by Rebecca Maitland and Helen Wood, the GAS office will be open Tuesday – Friday 9am-5.00pm.  Here, Rachael gives some further background to this tactical decision:

“As a Society we are future-focussed and want to interact and engage more with our local community, so understandably we are really excited about moving our offices into a more visible and accessible location.  Going forward, our aim is to continue to grow and by having a high street presence we will not only be further raising the profile of the Society as a whole; we will be showcasing our work with schools and our work with farmers and rural businesses in Glendale.”

“We currently have in the region of 300 members, who throughout the year enjoy a range of members events and exclusive visits. So, another very important aspect of this relocation is that we will hopefully encourage more people to engage with us, and more people to join and benefit from our membership programme.”

Annual membership for the Glendale Agricultural Society is £25 per year and benefits include free admission to the Glendale Show with access to the members marquee and facilities, reduced rates to exhibit in the livestock and equine classes, votes at general meetings of the society and invitations to attend other members events.  For more details please see  https://www.glendaleshow.com/society  or call 01668 283 868.
